It’s Thanksgiving week in the United States, and as families start to plan to cook big meals, local officials are reminding households to be mindful of potential waste.
In Springfield, Mo., Ashley Krug, Market Development Coordinator for Springfield Environmental Services, is getting ahead of the holiday with reminders that food waste can have a big impact on local landfills. Krug would like families to watch how much food is thrown away as landfill space is vital and there are better ways to deal with leftovers and food waste.
Krug would like to see families only buy what they need, prepare to freeze leftovers, and look into composting.
“Anything from a prep side. That’s your vegetables, your fruits, even your breads. The only things we don’t want to compost at home would be meat and dairy,” said Krug.
