New Company takes Reins on Stalled $8M Texas Landfill Gas Project

A move to generate electricity by harnessing methane gas and carbon dioxide at this city’s landfill that was hatched about five years ago, but appears have fallen by the wayside. Now, a new company said it wants to build an $8 million gas processing facility at the site and pay the city royalties.

“It’s my understanding the price of gas changed, so the market dynamics did too, so this company is one that found a way to utilize methane gas,” said City Manager Ramiro Garza.

The 147-acre landfill accepts more than 1,100 tons of waste per day and is the largest south of Corpus Christi. The new processing facility is expected to offset the output of 15,000 cars worth of methane gas. Federal regulations require landfill gas to be collected and managed once emission rates reach a certain threshold.
