Republic Services Issues Statement About Flint, Mich., Contract Termination

After an ongoing battle, the City of Flint, Mich., has terminated its 90-day contract extension with Republic Services but, according to Republic, this decision is not permissible because the contract requires a court order from Judge Farah for it to be properly terminated. Judge Farah has not issued an order so Republic will continue providing its services to the City of Flint.

“We remain optimistic that we will soon enter into a long-term contract with the city to provide waste and recycling collection services to the people of Flint. Republic was the lowest responsible bidder, and we received the highest bid scores on every measure from city staff,” Republic Services said in a statement. “We are committed to Flint, and believe its brightest days are ahead. We look forward to continuing our tradition of providing exceptional service in Flint for many years to come.”

In August, the city decided to end its contract with Republic but earlier this month, it changed its mind and allowed Republic to restore its services for an extended period of time.

In addition to the service interruptions, Republic has filed a complaint against the city for allegedly failing to respond to its Freedom of Information Act request for "disclosure of all documents, emails, correspondence, evaluations, notes and tabulations involved" in the city's trash contract bids.
