Washington Examines Ways To Cut Waste

Seattle -- The Washington State Department of Ecology has released a report, "The Beyond Waste Project," which suggests spending the next three years turning the state into a clean, garbage-free state.

The report suggests the public largely thinks current waste management habits are OK, yet indicates the state is making more solid waste and recycling less than a decade ago, and toxins are still entering waters and poisoning fish.

Consequently, the plan's 54-page summary introduces five "initiatives" the department wants to undertake without imposing new regulations. Copies of the report can be viewed online at www.ecy.wa.gov/beyondwaste.
