The City of Mount Gambier Council has announced that a trial it began three years ago, in partnership with 19 local businesses, has diverted more than 200 tonnes of organic waste.

The trial began in August 2021 and was jointly funded by Green Industries Council Modernization Grants, to encourage businesses to collect food waste in 660-liter waste bins. A local contractor collected the waste weekly and composted it at Bio Gro.

“The objective of the trial was to see if the collection system suited food businesses, and to enable them to divert large amounts of food waste away from landfill, as food waste creates methane and leachate which pollutes the environment,” said Council Sustainability Officer, Aaron Izzard.
