WasteExpo is a time to show off new products and this year was no different. At its booth, Sensata Technologies introduced the newest addition to its PreView Radar product line with the PreView STA79.
Holding a showing at its booth, Sensata welcomed interested parties to hear about the latest iteration of its PreView products. The newest solution to driver awareness, the PreView STA79 is set to improve the safety of medium and heavy-duty vehicles worldwide. The device works to alert drivers, raising operator awareness and fleet safety, while reducing accidents on the road. The PreView STA79 is an incredible tool that puts safety at the forefront in an industry where safety is crucial.
The new PreView STA79 is an improvement on previous iterations of the same tech, but not a replacement as previous versions will still be a valuable asset to customers. The new sensor has three adjustable areas of interest which allows the device to be set up to match the length of the vehicle from its center and allows customers to configure the front and rear zones to match their needs.
Compared to Sensata’s old sensor, the PreView STA79 is a dual antenna sensor. This gives the sensor a 180-degree field of view, compared to 150 degrees for the older sensor. This eliminates blind spots along the entire side of the vehicle. This aligns with the sensor's ability to monitor trailer turns and reduce the amount of false positive alerts.
“Something that we’re proud of is [the PreView STA79]’s ability to produce false positive detections via our proprietary algorithms and the fantastic work that our engineering staff has done,” said Jamen McDermott, Product Manager at Sensata Technologies.
The PreView STA79 has two features that help drivers in different scenarios while vehicles are in motion. The Side Turn Assist Operation helps drivers traveling less than 19 mph with alerts regarding road users while ignoring static objects like a street sign to limit “nuisance alerts” or to avoid a constant stream of alerts that are of little importance to the driver. While using a turn signal, drivers will see or hear an alert, and the built IMU, which increases alerts when turning into an object, will help drivers when a turn single is not activated.
Traveling faster than 19 mph, the STA79, using those proprietary algorithms McDermott spoke about, alert drives of moving vehicles in adjacent lanes. This land change assist feature can have its own alert area that is different from that of the slow speed option.
"With PreView STA79, we have reimagined what a single radar sensor can do to improve the safe operation of commercial vehicles," said McDermott in a press release.
"Our mission is to empower drivers and operators with the tools and technologies they want and need to safely navigate our ever-growing, busy world. PreView STA79 is not just a product: it incorporates more than 20 years of driver, safety manager and OEM feedback to create a catalyst for positive change in the way we approach safety.”
Sensata says that the PreView STA79 is now available for commercial deployment following several key programs through different companies worldwide.
