Contaminated Soil from Kansas Pipeline Leak Ends Up in Omaha Landfill

An environmental watchdog in Nebraska is up in arms over thousands of cubic yards of oil-soaked soil that ended up in an Omaha landfill after a pipeline leak in Kansas.

Jane Kleeb, the founder of Bold Nebraska, said that, “this is a foreign corporation that is using Nebraska as a dumping ground.” Kleeb went on to say that state officials should have informed Nebraskans of the waste and insisted that regular monitoring be done to ensure that waste is not contaminating the soil or water in the area.

According to lab reports, the oil-soaked soil contains hazardous chemicals such as benzene and hydrogen sulfide. However, officials from both TC Energy (Canada) and the Pheasant Point Landfill (Nebraska) have deemed the soil is safe to be deposited at the landfill after testing.
