Li-Cycle, a global lithium-ion battery resource recovery company, opened its first Spoke recycling facility in Europe.

The new facility is located in Sülzetal, Germany.

Li-Cycle uses these pre-processing facilities, or Spoke, to recycle battery manufacturing scrap and end-of-life batteries to produce black mass. Black mass is comprised of valuable metals such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt.

The Germany Spoke will use Li-Cycle’s patented and environmentally friendly “Generation 3” Spoke technology to process all forms of lithium-ion battery waste. This includes full electric vehicle battery packs that won’t need to be discharged, dismantled, or go through thermal processing.

"Today is a good day for Saxony-Anhalt," said Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, Dr. Reiner Haseloff. "The new battery recycling plant in Sülzetal is an investment with a future. It is an important contribution to a sustainable, efficient, and competitive battery industry. The achievement of sustainability goals depends on a circular economy. And we can and we must also make our living spaces environmentally- and climate-friendly."

The Li-Cycle Germany Spoke employs about 60 people and will further contribute to the region’s role in the clean technology industry. This new Spoke from Li-Cycle is the first in a line of European locations with Spokes planned to open later in France and Norway.
