London Pharmacies Partake in Inhaler Recycling Pilot Program Looking to Reduce Greenhouse Gases

South East London pharmacies have signed up for a pilot program that will collect and recycle old inhalers.

South East London pharmacies have signed up for a pilot program that will collect and recycle old inhalers.

The pilot program, which consists of 20 pharmacies, will look to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that come from improperly disposed inhalers. Through the program, donated inhalers will be sent to facilities that work to recover and repurpose a substantial portion of the harmful gases.

This program is organized by the South East London Integrated Care System, NHS England, and Greener NHS.

“Medicines make up 25 per cent of the NHS carbon footprint, which is a staggering statistic!” said Laura Stevenson, Pharmacist at King’s College Hospital.

“The climate crisis is a health crisis, and we need to take decisive action to ensure we minimize our environmental impact; returning your inhaler to your local pharmacy or hospital can play a huge part in this.”
