Eco Development, based in Mason, Ohio, is recycling Styrofoam, otherwise known as polystyrene.
Since the pandemic began many of us are relying on Styrofoam as we’ve increased take-out, online shopping and curbside pickup. Eco Development has invested in machinery to recycle the Styrofoam so it doesn’t end up in a landfill. The Styrofoam goes through a process at the facility where it's compacted into brick-like cubes and sold to companies to be reused for insulation, picture frames, hangers, surf boards and pellets.
In 2018, at least 113.8 million pounds of Styrofoam was recycled, while in 2019, it increased to at least 136.8 million pounds.
