Ottawa Waste Strategy Looks to Preserve Landfill Space by Limiting Household Waste Collection

Ottawa, Canada is about to roll out a new garbage pickup rule that will only allow households to put out three items of trash on pickup days.

Ottawa, Canada is about to roll out a new garbage pickup rule that will only allow households to put out three items of trash on pickup days.

This new rule is looking to limit the amount of trash going to landfills each week, hoping households produce less trash but local environmentalists aren’t convinced. Previously, households could put out up to six trash items each week, but officials are worried that the Trail Road Landfill will run out of room before a new plan can be put in place.

"This kind of approach is going to do nothing to solve our waste problem," said Kate Reekie, solid waste campaigner with CAFES Ottawa, a network of local environment advocates. 

"In a couple of years, I suspect that we will be looking at far more draconian methods to get our waste down."
