Vermont’s New Rules Require Monitoring for Toxic Chemicals

There are new rules in Vermont. They have been put in place for monitoring toxic chemicals everywhere human septage, the liquid and solid material pumped from a septic tank, cesspool or other primary treatment source for human waste, is applied to the land. 

Septage is used as a fertilizer, but environmentalists worry about what is in the septage and how the quality of drinking water could be affected.

The new rules require the testing of soil, groundwater and the material that is being applied to the land.
