Facing opposition from area residents, Winters Bros. has decided to drop its plans for a proposed waste transfer station in Yaphank, N.Y.

Officials believed this transfer station would have been critical to managing Long Island’s trash removal needs. According to Will Flower, Winters Bros. Vice President, Brookhaven Rail, who owns the 228-acre site where the facility would’ve been built, has agreed to sell the site to NorthPoint Development.

“Brookhaven Rail has made the decision not to pursue plans for the rail transfer station," Flower said. "We do believe rail is, and will continue to be, a very viable solution, both economically and environmentally, to the problem of solid waste.”

The new facility would have collected construction and demolition debris before shipping it to landfills off Long Island by rail.

Winters Bros. was acquired by WM earlier this year. Flower said at the time of the acquisition that plans for the Yaphank facility were “to be determined.”
