A waste-to-energy facility in Lee County, Fla., has hit a new milestone this month by turning 10 million tons of trash into energy. The county, along with Hendry County, diverts 90 percent of their waste from landfill.
According to the facility manager, Mike Duff, the facility has seen a six percent increase in trash it collects per year and during peak season, it’s not uncommon for trash to reach the top of the pit.

When you toss your garbage into a trash can in Lee and Hendry counties, only 10 percent of it is dumped into a landfill.
The rest of it is converted into electricity at Lee County's Waste-to-Energy facility.
This month, the operation hit a new milestone by transforming 10 million tons of trash into power.
