Construction of LFGTE Plant Begins at Republic’s Richmond, Va., Landfill

White Plains, N.Y.-based Fortistar has begun construction of a 6.4-megawatt landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) plant at Republic Services’ Old Dominion Sanitary Landfill in Richmond, Va. The plant is slated to begin operations in the fall of 2011.
Electricity produced by the LFGTE facility will be sold to Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC). The plant will produce enough electricity to power about 3,700 residences, according to a Republic press release.
Fortistar owns and operates more than 20 LFGTE projects at Republic landfills.
“The commissioning of this renewable energy resource for the people of Virginia is another example of Republic’s commitment to the environment,” said Don Slager, president and chief operating officer of Republic, in a press release. “This plant represents the current best available technology for emissions controls, making it an extremely clean energy source and will help the state increase its renewable energy supply.”
