Food Waste at U.K.’s House of Commons More Than Doubles in Three Years

The U.K.’s House of Commons has doubled its amount of food waste generated in three years. Last year alone, approximately 282 tonnes of food was tossed out by parliamentary caterers. That total is up from 130 tonnes in 2015.

While these figures are high, they are “below national average,” according to a Commons spokesman, who said the food waste was sent to an anaerobic digestion facility to generate energy.

Some 282 tonnes of food was discarded by parliamentary caterers last year – the weight of 21 London buses – up from 130 tonnes in 2015.

A Commons spokesman said the levels were 'below national average' and the waste was sent to an anaerobic digestion facility to generate energy – but Labour MP Kerry McCarthy said this response was disappointing.
