Unpredictable Ordering Leads to Increased Food Waste
May 15, 2020
As we continue to social distance to flatten the COVID-19 curve, many of us are ordering takeout to support local businesses.
New research by Just Eat and the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) shows that £1.8bn worth of takeout is thrown away every year in the United Kingdom. And since social distancing has been instituted, fluctuations in the demand and unpredictability of orders has led to a slight increase in food waste.
The good news is that people are becoming more conscious about their ordering and eating habits and restaurants can use apps like Too Good To Go to sell food surpluses to consumers at a discount.
Robin Clark, Director of Global Restaurant Services and Sustainability at Just Eat said, “Reducing avoidable food waste is one of the easiest ways we can tackle the carbon footprint of takeaway meals and make a positive impact on the environment.”
