NYC Might Consider Garbage Cuts, Layoffs

New York -- Sanitation Department officials may be considering reducing garbage pickups and workforce layoffs in preparation for New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's latest budget, according to

New York Newsday

. The Mayor is scheduled to unveil his budget on April 15, and as the city faces a projected more than $3 billion deficit, Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty has not ruled out any changes. The city is speculating that communities receiving trash pickups three times per week would have services reduced to twice-per-week. However, Doherty said how the sanitation department deals with its latest 2.5 percent budget reduction mandate largely will be up to Bloomberg and his aides.
