The Cup That Cures

The waste industry is brewing up its own cup of tea, and it's not sweet, green, black or Earl Gray. Similar to the more popular flavors, although admittedly not as delectable, a year-round dose of compost tea is said to promote good health. But this medicinal drink is for plants, vegetables and lawns — not people.

According to Soil Soup Inc., Seattle, which has concocted a compost tea-brewing system for savvy gardeners, organics can be steeped, as with many other teas, then sprayed on greenery instead of being served with biscuits and cucumber sandwiches. And the new tea provides the same concentrated, highly nutritious benefits of compost, while eliminating the months of “cooking” and hard work normally required for decomposition.

And you thought tea was just for crumpets.
