The Lanny and Kay Hickman internship program, sponsored by the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), Silver Spring, Md., offers students bound for careers in waste management an opportunity to add real life experience to their college preparation.

Students selected for the SWANA/Hickman Internship Program (SHIP) may serve a semester developing their research skills at the SWANA offices in Silver Spring, or they may be dispatched to a SWANA member location elsewhere, to help research information to improve the waste industry.

The program focus will depend on the student's course of study, such as engineering, environmental sciences, natural resources management or other relevant fields. Each project is crafted by the Hickman Intern Committee, SWANA, the sponsoring internship partners and the student's faculty adviser. Lanny Hickman, former SWANA executive director, also supervises each internship. Applicants must be entering their junior, senior or graduate years.
