Trash bags are the new fad at the Bronx Preparatory Charter School, at least for two sixth-grade girls who failed to wear their uniforms to school one day. As punishment for their attire, Principal Marina Damiba made the girls sport trash-bag skirts — not as a humiliation, she says — but to demonstrate that fashion is not the focus of school. Although the punishment initially seemed excessive to some parents, the mother of one of the girls admitted that her daughter had learned a lesson.
Perhaps now those navy blues and khakis won't seem so dreary, and the school can go back to using trash bags to cleanup a different kind of mess.
