ALTHOUGH NEW ORLEANS' FRENCH QUARTER has had the reputation of being trashy, the city has been trying to cleanup its act. But some haulers have been making a messy situation even messier.

Approximately 40 to 50 private haulers are contracted to collect trash from bars and restaurants in the Quarter and dispose of the waste at an area landfill. However, some allegedly have been picking up the commercial garbage and dumping it around the corner — leaving the trash for city sanitation workers who pickup in residential areas.

In an effort to catch the scoundrel garbage collectors, local police plan a crackdown. City law allows vehicles to be seized from anyone caught illegally dumping. Yet there's no word on what the men in blue will do if they seize refuse trucks and are left holding the trash bags.
