WasteExpo 2003
April 1, 2003
Welcome to WasteExpo 2003!
THE LAST TIME I WROTE TO ALL OF YOU, we were getting ready to go to one of America's playgrounds — Las Vegas! And while I'm certain many people left WasteExpo 2002 with stories of success at the tables, there also were many stories of deals being made on the show floor of WasteExpo. A tough economic environment and world event uncertainties didn't stop the people of this great industry from doing what they came to do at WasteExpo! And the industry came … in record numbers. While other trades shows across all industries saw declines in attendance, WasteExpo's attendance in 2002 increased 9 percent! If this alone doesn't speak to the strength of this show, this industry and most importantly of its people, I don't know what does!
The economic environment is still tough — very tough. And there is still a tremendous uncertainly around the world. But I'm certain that we all have come to realize that to some degree, we can't worry about what we cannot control. Being a “control-freak” myself, it's difficult to accept this notion. But it's true. We all have jobs to do and lives to lead. This is what we must focus on.
Speaking for WasteExpo, we will not let anything stand in the way of our focus. Our focus is on the needs of our customers. Our focus is on organizing an event that serves the needs of all waste and recycling professionals. Our focus is on creating a forum where people can see new products, learn how to do their jobs better, reconnect with old friends, and forge new relationships.
I am happy to announce that despite tough times and uncertainty, WasteExpo is growing. We welcome two industry-leading conferences and their participants to WasteExpo. Beginning this year in New Orleans, the Medical Waste Conference, organized by NSWMA's Medical Waste Institute, will co-locate with WasteExpo 2003. Then in 2004, in Dallas, Waste Tech 2004 — The Landfill Technology Conference, organized by NSWMA's Landfill Institute will co-locate with WasteExpo and The Medical Waste Conference.
Since joining WasteExpo just before the 1999 event in Dallas, I have watched people I know leave companies and change companies. I have been proud to be part of an effort to help WasteExpo evolve from a private sector trade show to a show which embraces all industry participants — private sector, public sector, waste generators, medical waste professionals, environmental services directors at hospitals and health care facilities, and landfill owners and operators. It has been a very exciting time for me personally and professionally. And as exciting as our future together is, I remind myself that I must stop now to say, “Thank You!” to all of you who have contributed to this effort — to my friends at Waste Age magazine, at the Environmental Industry Associations, to those who have served on the WasteExpo Advisory Committee and to those who have called/e-mailed with suggestions, comments or just notes of, “Hey, I see the changes you are making … thanks.” Well, it's my turn to say “thanks” back. It's the people who make this industry great. And it's the people of this industry who have made my years on WasteExpo wonderful. Thank you. We still have tough waters to navigate, but I'm certain we can navigate them successfully — together.
I'm looking forward to seeing all of you in New Orleans! It's going to be a great show!
Sincerely,
Rita Ugianskis-Fishman
