N.Y. Councilman Proposes Garbage Truck GPS Tracking Bill to Prevent Traffic Pileups

The bill would require the City of New York Department of Sanitation to publically release real-time GPS data of its garbage trucks.

In an effort to prevent future traffic pileups, New York City Councilman David Greenfield is proposing a bill that would require the City of New York Department of Sanitation (DSNY) to publically release real-time GPS data of its garbage trucks.

Although the DSNY doesn’t currently provide real-time GPS data of its garbage trucks year-round, it does offer GPS tracking data during snowstorms so residents can confirm which streets have been plowed.

New York Daily News has more:

A Brooklyn pol who says he gets stuck behind a garbage truck “at least” three times a week while driving his kids to school is introducing legislation on Wednesday that he says could fix the annoying traffic jams.

The bill from City Councilman David Greenfield, whose district includes Borough Park and Midwood, would require the Department of Sanitation to to publicly release its GPS data detailing exactly where its garbage trucks are in real time.
