Princess Cruise Lines has been ordered to pay $40 million for illegally dumping waste into the ocean. According to papers filed in court, the company has been making these illegal discharges via bypass equipment since 2005.
If approved by court, $10 million of the $40 million will go toward community service projects to benefit maritime environment, $3 million of the $10 million community service payments will be used for environmental projects in South Florida and $1 million of the $10 million community service payments will be used to benefit the marine environment in UK waters.

Princess Cruise Lines has been ordered to pay the largest-ever criminal penalty for the intentional pollution of ocean waters.
The company has agreed to plead guilty to seven felony charges stemming from the illegal dumping of contaminated waste into the open seas and deliberate acts to cover it up.
The investigation began after an engineer on the Caribbean Princess reported to authorities that the ship’s crew was using a “magic pipe” to discharge oily waste off the coast of England on Aug. 23, 2013.
