BTS Bioenergy to Build North American HQ, Two Bioenergy Facilities in Maryland

The Maryland Environmental Service (MES) has entered into a consulting agreement with BTS Bioenergy under the terms of which the company will begin work on planned projects in Howard County, Md.

BTS Bioenergy will establish the company’s North American headquarters and develop two bio-digestion recycling facilities in Howard County. The Howard County and BTS MOU will result in up to a $40 million investment and the creation of as many as 20 jobs in Howard County.

The MES and BTS Bioenergy agreement provides support and technical services for the Howard County projects. MES already operates fourteen water and wastewater treatment facilities throughout Howard County, including those at a number of the county’s schools.

MES Director and CEO Roy McGrath, and Strategic Partnerships Executive Matthew Sherring, joined Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman and representatives of the Howard County Economic Development Authority for visits to the BTS Bionergy’s operations and European headquarters in Verona, Italy, and the related announcement of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the county and BTS Bioenergy.

“These partnerships are yet another way Governor Hogan’s Administration is working on innovative technologies and projects to enhance our environment,” McGrath said in a statement. “Today’s agreements represent an important step in Maryland’s commitment to greater environmental sustainability and creating jobs,” said McGrath.

“Howard County has always been forward thinking when it comes to environmental sustainability,” Allan Kittleman said in a statement. “This MOU creates collaboration between Howard County, Maryland Environmental Service, and BTS Bioenergy and will put us at the forefront of the next generation of clean, renewable energy, which can serve as an example for the rest of the country.”

BTS Bioenergy operates more than 190 anaerobic digester facilities in Europe and Asia.

The North American headquarters and two facilities would be the company’s first locations in the USA.

“Since we first began looking, we found Maryland to be a welcoming, business-friendly location that shares our goals of environmental sustainability, effective waste-management practices, and creation of smart energy solutions,” Shawn Kreloff, BTS Bioenergy executive director and CEO, Americas, said in a statement. “The establishment of our North American headquarters in Maryland also provides us critical access to technical talent and an operating platform for expansion throughout North America.”

BTS Bioenergy is not currently disclosing the specifics regarding site locations for its North American headquarters or bio-digester facilities.
