Houston-based Waste Management has begun operating a landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) project as its Petrolia Landfill in southwestern Ontario. The firm says the project is the first privately owned LFGTE facility in the region.

The facility generates approximately 3.2 megawatts of power and powers about 2,500 homes in the surrounding area. Waste Management also has plans for a LFGTE project at its Twin Creeks Landfill in nearby Watford.

“LFGTE is a source of alternative energy that makes use of the waste we all generate,” said Mike Hirlehey, district manager with Waste Management, in a statement. “This facility marks a milestone for clean energy in Ontario as Waste Management expands our LFGTE mandate with the goal of reducing the province’s carbon footprint. This is the second facility Waste Management has opened in Ontario and only the third in all of Canada.”
