Reyna Bryan, President of RCD Packaging Innovation penned an open letter to the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry about fixing the recycling system.

Bryan hopes that the industry will come together and take action to find a sustainable solution to deliver products without creating waste in the process.

Bryan believes the solution lies in changing the definition for “RECYCLABLE” in the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC’s) Green Guide. To create a true circular economy, Bryan suggests that the industry only put materials into the system that have strong end-markets on the secondary recycled material market. And an effective way to drive this change would be to update the definition of recyclable in the FTC Green Guides to say that a material can only be labeled as recyclable if an end-market exists for over 60 percent of the material entering the system.

Bryan’s hope is that the plastic industry would be incentivized to invest heavily in developing real end-markets for recycled materials and they would be dis-incentivized to produce a growing volume of virgin plastic resin.
