Ohio Convention Center Diverts Food and Construction Waste with Recycling Program
The convention center diverted 75,880 pounds of cardboard in 2017.

The Huntington Convention Center in Cleveland diverted tens of thousands of pounds of waste from landfills in 2017, thanks to its Reduce, Reuse, Recycling program. The convention center hosted 222 events in 2017, which attracted 222,656 visitors.
The center, which is managed by SMG, diverted 75,880 pounds of cardboard, 10,000 pounds of glass, 9,000 pounds of bulk and shredded paper and the equivalent of 23,005 plastic water bottles. Moreover, the onsite food waste recycling system reduced food waste into a slurry that was taken to an aerobic digestion facility.

The Convention Center donated 26,980 pounds of recycled materials through its Sustainability Donation Program to local organizations including Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the Ed Keating Center and Karamu House. Items included leftover carpeting, insulation, gardening equipment, fertilizer, building materials, drywall, tools, children's furniture, paint, landscaping brick, drywall and trim.
The facility also provides a biannual donation of clothing, coats, gloves and other items from the building's lost and found to the Salvation Army.
SMG is a member of the Cleveland 2030 District, a movement to create high-performance building districts throughout Greater Cleveland with the goal of dramatically reducing the environmental impacts of building construction and operations.
