EuRIC Responds to European Parliament’s Vote in Favor of 70% Recycling Goal

EuRIC has stated that there is “substantial room for improvement in the method chosen by the European Parliament to measure recycling rates.”

Last week, the European Parliament voted in favor of four legislative amendments that will help the European Union recycle 70 percent of its municipal waste and 80 percent of its packaging material by 2030. And after reviewing the draft legislation on municipal waste, the European Recycling Industries' Confederation (EuRIC) has stated that there is “substantial room for improvement in the method chosen by the European Parliament to measure recycling rates” and that “measuring recycling targets at the input of production processes runs against the objective of accurate and uniform statistics across the European Union.”

‘Measuring recycling targets at the input of production processes runs against the objective of accurate and uniform statistics across the EU,’ EuRIC insists in the wake of the European Parliament’s adoption of draft legislation on municipal waste. ‘It is in most instances impossible to trace back the origin of the waste stream(s) for which targets have been set, contrary to the output-based method proposed by the European Commission.’
